Celebrating 20 Years in Chiropractic!!!
The month of September, I am celebrating my 20th year in chiropractic. I would like to thank all of the patients, friends, family, and teachers who helped me make it this far. Chiropractic has been a wonderful way to contribute to the well-being of society, one soul at a time. I still look forward to every day at the office!
I was first introduced to chiropractic at the age of 15. I had no particular problems and was in rather good health. My physical fitness was strong as I was enthusiastically studying martial arts. I only knew two things about chiropractic at the time: 1. My grandmother attended frequently and found respite from severe headaches, and 2. Chiropractors worked with the nervous system… that meant nerves… nerves meant reflexes… reflexes were really important to martial artists!
So, I booked an appointment to find out what chiropractic was about. The local chiropractor wished to know the nature of my complaint. I got an odd look when I said, “I’d like a wheel alignment.” It is unusual, even today, for patients to come in seeking optimum function. More often they come in with a variety of ailments and pains.
Nevertheless, he set to work. I got up off the table after I received my first adjust, and I was astounded! The whole world was different! Colours were brighter! I could breathe more deeply and more easily. My posture had improved and tensions I hadn’t known were there had released leaving me with a feeling of ease and grace.
I was back the next week!
As you can see, for me, chiropractic, from the beginning, was always about optimal function of the MindBody being I am and you are. I was fortunate to attend Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, TX and become immersed in their excellent curriculum. One of the things I value most was the emphasis that was placed on a detailed analysis of the patient. I have learned many methods of treatment, but the careful consideration of why one method is more useful for this patient, of why this vertebra is adjusted before that one, or instead of that one, is the most prized part of my education.
The adjustment is what chiropractors call the intervention we deliver when we move your bones. What few people know is that moving the bone to “push it back into place” is the least of what happens. Yes, the bone actually moves. Yes, there are fast stretches to muscles and ligaments. Yes, there are changes in blood flow. Yes, there are changes in alignment. But the real magic happens because the adjustment changes the sensory signal to the brain! The incoming information to the brain is clarified, defragmented, or rebooted! With improved communication from the body, the central nervous system can make better choices about how it is organizing the rest of you – every program runs more efficiently.
It is claimed the nervous system is the “Master System” of the body – it organizes, directs, coordinates, and modulates every other system of the body. As a chiropractor, the spine is merely an access pathway in to “adjusting” the nervous system function. This is actually the way chiropractic first used the term “adjustment.” An adjustment was not just manipulating a joint, it specifically designated the intention, act, and effect of optimizing nervous system function.
I am passionate about the effect of proper nervous system function on health and vitality. I am also passionate about efficient structural alignment (Posture), proper diaphragmatic function (Breathing), strength and flexibility, coordinated and graceful movement, nutrition, and how what you think affects your health and vitality.
I cannot wait to see the breakthroughs science will bring in the next 20 years!
