Chiropractic Care

The word “chiropractic” comes from ancient Greek and means “done by hand.”

Adjustment of the joints of the body has been used in the healing arts for many centuries and is at the heart of modern chiropractic care.

Chiropractors are specialists in manual adjustment of the vertebrae of the spine and other joints of the body. Adjustment helps relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the joints and supporting muscles and ligaments – so you can enjoy your everyday activities again as quickly as possible.

Your chiropractor will recommend a course of treatment specific to you that may also include mobilization of the joints, ultrasound, muscle release techniques, muscle stimulation and therapeutic exercises.  Chiropractors are also trained to provide nutritional counselling, and recommend rehabilitation and injury prevention strategies.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of the fine needles into the body at specific points shown as effective in the treatment of specific health problems.  These points have been mapped by the Chinese over a period of two thousand years.  Recently, electromagnetic research has confirmed their locations.

Eastern practitioners believe that a vital energy called Qi (pronounced "chee") flows through the body along a variety of pathways called meridians. There are 14 major acupuncture meridians. Each of these is believed to be associated with a particular part of the body.

Traditional acupuncturists believe that the interruption, or blockage, of the Qi causes disease.  To restore the flow of the Qi and promote health, acupuncturists insert needles at certain body points along these meridians.

Western researchers are still trying to define scientific terms why acupuncture works. Research suggests that                                                                                                           acupuncture stimulates the body's nerve cells to produce natural painkillers called endorphins.

Cupping

Cupping is a form of therapy widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with the first documented case being over 3,000 years ago. It consists of creating a local suction on the skin using either heat  or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps). This method draws out toxins, mobilizes blood flow, soothes muscle pain and, in some cases, helps cure insomnia.

Many Olympians from the Summer 2016 Games were to have said to used the benefits of cupping.

Tui Na - Chinese Massage

Tui Na is a therapeutic form of massage and has been used in China for more than 2,000 years. Tui Na massage therapy has been considered the external form of massage and is used for giving special treatments to people of all ages, from infancy to old age. This Chinese therapy makes use of rhythmic compression techniques along different energy channels of the body to establish harmonious flow of Qi throughout the body and bringing it back to balance. It works deeply with the positive energy of the body. In Tui Na massage, the muscles and tendons are massaged with the help of hands, and an acupressure technique is applied to directly affect the flow of Qi at different acupressure points of the body, thus facilitating the healing process. It removes the blockages and keeps the energy moving through the meridians as well as the muscles.

Chinese Medicine

China's 3,000 year old medical system is based on the idea that balancing active and passive forces within the body enhances chi, or life force, and leads to healing.  The traditional Chinese doctor uses acupuncture, herbs, food, massage and exercise to recover or preserve health. Herbal Medicine in TCM describes formulae which are made from the roots, stems, bark, leaves, seeds or flowers of many plants, as well as some mineral parts.  Some come in ready prepared pill or powder, called 'patent' herbal remedies.  The herbal medicines are usually taken in the form of a 'recipe' called a prescription. To make up a prescription, the TCM practitioner carefully blends together a number of herbs which have specific functions.
